Brenda's Story
The police arrived at my apartment and recognized the danger I was in. The officer suggested I call Journey Center’s 24-Hour Helpline. Journey Center staff helped me find safe housing that was immediately available. They also helped with assessing danger and safety planning.
But I had to call the Helpline just a few days later because my landlord would not let me out of my current lease. I learned that housing laws allow domestic violence victims to break their lease if the danger is documented. Journey Center worked with the police to provide that documentation. With this crucial help I was able to break my lease without penalty.
“I feel free. I have a real chance at being happy even while alone. Thank you, Journey, for all your help. You are amazing!!!!”
