May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and during this month and beyond, it’s especially important to consider the mental health effects of domestic violence on survivors and their children. Mental health conditions are found at higher rates with domestic violence survivors. Regardless of which form domestic abuse takes, all forms can undoubtedly leave devastating physical and emotional impacts on the victim.

Survivors of domestic violence often endure severe consequences such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse, which can significantly disrupt their lives in multiple ways. At Journey Center, we are dedicated to supporting survivors on their mental health journeys.

Here are some of the ways we help make a difference:

  • Trauma Therapy: The Trauma Services Department offers therapy to individuals age 4 through adulthood who have experienced, witnessed, or been exposed to domestic violence, child abuse, and/or another interpersonal trauma.

  • Support Groups: Available for individuals who have experienced abusive relationships. These free, weekly, facilitated groups offer a confidential setting for discussion, peer support, and more.

Domestic violence has a significant impact on mental health. It is essential to recognize the signs of domestic violence and offer support and resources to survivors. By listening, believing, and offering assistance, we can help survivors of domestic violence heal and rebuild their lives.
